LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue team has called of search efforts for the rest of the night for a missing hiker on Mount Charleston.

The team has returned to the staging area because of hazardous weather conditions that pose a threat to rescuers. The search and rescue operation will resume at first light if the hiker is still missing.

Police received the call at 8:34 a.m. about an emergency text message from a distress beacon tracking device. The message said an individual hiking with a dog had become lost.

Due to severe weather on the mountain, police cannot search for the hiker by air.

Metro worked with the Nevada Department of Transportation to clear the roads surrounding the search and to set up a staging area to work their rescue out of.

Tire chains are now requried in the Mount Charleston area, not including four-wheel drive vehicles.
