HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -
Theater students at Green Valley High School are rehearsing for a new play with deep and relevant subject matter to their peers.
"The Weight of Words" is a play about bullying, and it will be presented in the school theater later this week. Students spent Monday afternoon in rehearsals.
"I know that people have seen (other) people be bullied, and it's a big deal," said Nicole Truex, a Green Valley junior and actress in the play.
Truex said the play has had a big impact on the theater group.
"The Weight of Words" originated on stage at a Florida school, but Green Valley teacher Jennifer Hemme brought it to Henderson.
"(Bullying) is more than just a buzzword," Hemme said. "It's a real issue, and I feel like who better to hear it from than the students' voices?"
The play contains strong actions and language, even one scene where a student is beaten to death.
"It's interesting because some of the people who are playing bullies are actually the nicest people you could ever meet, so for them to turn onto this evil and rude person… it's interesting to see," said Christina Najar, a GVHS senior.
Hemme and the students hope it will spark a change in the way they think about bullying.
"I just want to find some way, and this is one of the first steps that I'm able to take to help with that," said student Darion Ramos.
"We have an opportunity in the theater to express something that is important - not just to entertain," Hemme added.
The performance will be held Nov. 29 through Dec. 1 for students and Dec. 1 to 3 at 7 p.m. for the public.
