LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The Las Vegas Rescue Mission had a turkey and food basket giveaway Saturday morning.

The giveaway was to start at eight in the morning, but people started lining up as early as 3 a.m.

The Mission gave away 2,100 turkeys and all the trimmings to families in need.

Director John Fogal says that's 500 more than last year and they weren't able to take care of everyone, "There were some we weren't able to get to. But we've already received calls and let everyone know, those who need assistance can come by and we'll be able to help them."

The mission's pantries are now almost bare except for turkeys saved in a freezer for a Thanksgiving meal for about 1,500 homeless people.

With the holiday season getting started the shelter is asking for more donations.

It's also holding a toy drive and is asking for new, unwrapped toys to give to needy kids this Christmas.
