LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Las Vegas wants residents to know free help is available to them if they're stuck in foreclosure.
The city announced Wednesday the launch of an advertising campaign letting people know of free assistance from counselors approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The campaign directs people to www.freehomeaidnv.org, which connects them to those counselors who can help them learn more about their options relating to short sales, foreclosure mediation, mortgage modifications and foreclosure fraud assistance.
The campaign will be running on outdoor billboards, print publications, radio and online for the next three months, the city said. It was made possible by a grant from Fannie Mae and HUD.
The city said the campaign is necessary as homeowners have been paying to get foreclosure advice and have often fallen victim to fraud.
According to the city, Las Vegas' Ward 6 has been the worst hit in the city by default notices. Nearly 3,800 notices were filed in the last 12 months.
Councilman Steve Ross said he is introducing an ordinance that would make banks responsible for cleaning up vacant, foreclosed properties by first registering the homes with the city.
The ordinance would also penalize institutions for failing to maintain the properties.
The city also announced a program that would provide moving assistance to single family renters who are forced to move due to a landlord's foreclosure, default or bankruptcy.
People can learn if they qualify and apply at www.lasvegasnevada.org/foreclosure or by calling 702-229-4273.
