NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) -

A 20-year-old woman was killed, and another hospitalized with critical injuries after their car was hit by a utility truck in North Las Vegas Friday.

According to North Las Vegas Police, the collision happened around 12:40 p.m. at the intersection of Losee Road and East Centennial Parkway.

Witnesses on the scene told investigators the NV Energy commercial crane truck, operated by a 47-year-old Las Vegas resident, ran a red light and crashed into a vehicle carrying three women.

Two women were transported to University Medical Center. The 20-year-old driver died at the hospital.

The other woman, a 25-year-old, was listed in critical condition.

The third woman in the vehicle, another 20-year-old, was treated at the scene and is expected to be OK.

The driver in the NV Energy truck was not injured.

The company issued a statement Friday afternoon saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in today's accident.  We will continue to cooperate fully with North Las Vegas Police in its investigation."

Some drivers who frequent the area said the temporary stoplights at the intersection are positioned lower than typical traffic signals, and create more danger.

"You're used to looking pretty high for lights, and you have to be very careful because they're in a very non-standard position," said North Las Vegas resident Jodi Notch.

North Las Vegas Police said the lights have been present at the intersection for a significant period of time.

"What it comes down to is whether or not that intersection is under construction, drivers truly have to pay attention because things change on a daily basis," said Ofc. Chrissie Coon.

The driver of the NV Energy truck submitted to a blood test, but did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police said.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
