LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Traffic returned to a free, unrestricted flow Monday morning after a weekend of what the Nevada Department of Transportation called a "marathon" repaving.

NDOT said the project was complete 10 days ahead of schedule due to long hours and extra crew.

More than 10,000 tons of asphalt were laid down over the weekend and the I-15 was reduced to one lane in both directions at one point.

I-15 northbound lanes opened Saturday night and southbound lanes were open Sunday night.

The total project cost $6 million at points on the I-15 from Tropicana Avenue to the Spaghetti Bowl.

Final striping is scheduled to take place in later this month.

NDOT used crumb rubber, recycled tires, as paving material to be more environmentally friendly.

Crumb rubber is said to create smoother commutes with less road noise, improved pavement drainage and longer durability.
