Gov. Brian Sandoval joined other Nevada lawmakers in declaring a "Week of Respect" to bring more awareness about the problem of bullying in school.
Fred Spierer, a teacher at Liberty High School in Henderson, has firsthand knowledge about bullies. He was a former parole officer in Orange County. "Most bullies, if not all of them, have low self esteem and at the expense of making themselves feel better they are going to make someone feel bad," he said. Spierer heads a program called S.A.V.E. Students Against Violence Everywhere.
The national program has had positive results among the students at his school. Spierer says the message of S.A.V.E. is clear. "Let us know what is going on and we'll nip it in the bud. We'll call in the student, we'll talk to our school police or, if we have to, our Deans. We are a team and we want all of our students to feel safe when they come to our school," he said.
S.A.V.E. was launched in 1989 after a student in South Carolina was killed while trying to prevent bullies from intimidating other students.
