Coroner: No autopsies on upcoming reality show

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Clark County Coroner Michael Murphy said a potential Discovery Channel reality show chronicling his office will be respectful to the county's deceased and their families.

Last week the Clark County Board of Commissioners approved an agreement with Discovery Studios to be paid $5,000 per show for ten episodes.

"We do think that there are things that we can talk about and show that will give people a little bit of an insight into the world that we live in every day," Murphy told FOX5.

Murphy says the show will be about his staff and the work they do at crime and accident scenes, as well as in office.

But Murphy said the show will not focus on individual cases.

The idea of a coroner reality television show has many in the community outraged.

"It's gross, it's not moral," said Las Vegas resident Johnny Ford.

"I know I wouldn't want to go through it if I were the one to be the victim," said Belinda Rangel, who lives in Las Vegas.

Murphy wants to reassure the public the show won't be inappropriate and no bodies will be shown.

"There may be some re-enactment that's going to be done… but there will be no actual autopsies or examinations that will be shown," said Murphy.

As part of the agreement, the county will have final say of what makes air.

Murphy sees the final product not as a tongue-in-cheek reality show like the History Channel's Pawn Stars but more of a documentary style show like FOX's Cops.

"I will tell you that if it can't be done appropriately that it won't be done," Murphy said.

Some in Clark County say a tasteful show about the Coroner's Office sounds like something they would watch.

"I read true crime books all day long so I think it's interesting," said Las Vegas resident Elizabeth Wallace.

"It's also educational for the young people who want to grow up and figure out how to have those type of jobs," Denetra Johnson, a mother who lives in Las Vegas, told FOX5.
