DUI trial delayed almost 4 years after deaths

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Nearly four years after Lacey Ambro allegedly killed two people while driving drunk, she has yet to go to trial.

"This case has certainly been dragged along far, far longer than it should have been," said Clark County Deputy District Attorney Bruce Nelson.

Nelson said Ambro's trial was supposed to start on Monday. A hearing this morning changed that.

"The defendant's attorney, John Watkins, got up and basically made a motion to withdraw from the case," Nelson said.

Watkins withdrew because he's Ambro's uncle, but that's not new information, said Nelson.

"We had indicated, a couple of years ago I believe, that (Watkins) might become a witness in the case and that he was obviously related to the defendant."

Judge Valorie Vega allowed this delay and has allowed others in this case before. FOX5 reached out to her this afternoon. A staffer told us it would be inappropriate for Vega to comment on pending litigation.

"The judge, of course, has the final say anytime one of the parties moves to continue," said Nelson.

Ambro allegedly was drunk and behind the wheel of the car that rolled over February 2008, killing Zoey Roanoke and another teen.

Roanoke's mother blames Vega and Watkins for years of delay.

"I'm angry," said Katie Steele. "I'm really angry about it. I broke down this morning."

She wonders if her daughter will ever get justice.

"We've had to live with this for four years. I've had to file chapter 13 bankruptcy because of $75,000 in medical bills. This has affected a lot of people in a lot of different ways."

Although the trial has been re-scheduled for Feb. 6, she's hesitant to believe it will actually happen.

"These poor families have been put through hell for the last four years," Nelson said. "It's time to go to trial."
