Las Vegas celebrates divorce on the Strip

Posted: Updated:

Thousands come to Las Vegas to tie the knot, but a new report shows Nevada is number one in the country for divorce. And Las Vegas is profiting off divorce with increasingly popular "divorce parties."

The U.S. Census Bureau shows 6.6 out of every 1,000 people split.

"The divorce party is sort of the reverse of the bachelor/bachelorette party," president of Vegas VIP Dan Nunes said.

Nunes says the partiers will spend hundreds of dollars kicking off their new lives at the spa, shows and nightclubs.

"The guys look at it like it's a weight off their shoulders, while the girls look at it as a completely new beginning," Nunes said.

People move to Nevada to divorce as well.

Attorney Bruce Shapiro says it's fast, convenient and relatively easy if both parties are in agreement. "They can be divorced within a couple of weeks, versus a six months-plus waiting period in other states," he said.

While financial stress is usually a big factor for divorce, life in Las Vegas leads to a whole other crop of issues when you mix in the 24 hour bars, strip clubs, and odd working hours in general.

According to the Census Bureau, Nevada is followed by Arkansas and Wyoming for highest divorce rate.

Couples in Massachusetts stay together most frequently.
