A 29-year-old Las Vegas man was charged with drunken driving Monday after a collision east of the Strip.

Alcibiades Felix was behind the wheel of a 2008 Lexus that crashed into a 1995 Geo Metro on Flamingo Road near the Swenson Street intersection.

Police said Felix was speeding in the westbound lanes when he lost control of the car, crossed the median and struck the second vehicle.

The driver of the Geo Metro, a 54-year-old man, was pronounced dead at Sunrise Hospital.

Felix, failed several field sobriety tests at the scene, police said.

The accident was the latest in a series of high-profile DUI cases since the start of this month.

Summer is typically a dangerous time of year on southern Nevada roads, according to AAA. The agency said it often sees more accidents in June, July and August, because of the increase in summer parties and events.

Not all DUI incidents can be blamed on drinking. Some, including a collision that killed an 82-year-old man last week, are attributed to prescription drugs.

"If you have to ask yourself should I be driving, then you should call for help," said AAA spokesman Michael Geeser.

In addition to DUI checkpoints, Las Vegas Metro police will continue their "Every 15 Minutes" program this fall. It's an effort to curb drinking and driving among young people.

The program will be held at Arbor View High School on Sept. 15 and 16, and at Veteran's Tribute and Tech Academy on Oct. 13 and 14.
