HOA To Kids: Stay Out Of Common Areas 5-06-2011

In the Las Vegas community of Greenbriar Townhouses, allowing your children to play outdoors could earn you a fine.
The community's homeowners' association rules are specific about where children are not allowed to play, including in common areas.
Ramona Sjogren said her 5-year-old son is not allowed to play in a grassy common area directly in front of her townhouse.
"I actually thought this was OK," she said of the area. "It's in front of the house where you can see them, which is what most parents want."
But her association sent her a violation notice that informed her that common areas are off-limits for children-at-play.
"The security lady came by and told me to have them play in the street or the back alley ways where everyone pulls in and out of their garages," Sjogren said.
The company that manages the HOA -- Tru Management -- said the community, near US 95 and Desert Inn Road, agreed to the rules.
The rules can be changed to allow children to play in common areas, but would require a 51 percent vote from homeowners.
"The management company tells us they can play in this area so long as they have parental supervision; however, at the moment, that grassy area is closed," Sjogren said. "There's a lot of children in here and there should be something for them to do."
In the meantime, she said her children have few outdoor play options.
"We have backyards, but they're not big," she said. "You could ride a bike in a circle."
The HOA is having its May meeting later in the month. Sjogren said she will attend and hopes to get support from other parents in the community so that their children can have a safe place to play outdoors.
