Dodgers End 51s Relationship
Age Of Cashman Field Main Reason For Dodger Departure
Get ready to buy new hats and jerseys -- the Dodgers are leaving Las Vegas. After eight years as the major league team for the Las Vegas 51s, Dodgers officials have decided to end their contract, naming the 25-year-old Cashman Field as the reason for the breakup. The Dodgers will return to Albuquerque to play in their state-of-the-art Isotopes Park while 51s officials will search for a new major-league sponsor. The Florida Marlins, the Washington Nationals and the Toronto Blue Jays have been named as potential replacements.Managers for the 51s said they're disappointed because the Dodgers seemed like a great fit, with so many fans here because of Las Vegas' proximity to Los Angeles. But Mayor Oscar Goodmans said he never really felt the connection."With all due respect to the Dodgers, I never saw that big connect that we were hoping for with Los Angeles right around the corner," he said. "I myself saw more of a kinship with the Padres here."The 51's went 74-69 this year, went to the playoffs in 2002, and have has three winning seasons in the past eight years. All three of the potential major-league affiliates had losing seasons last year. But the president of the 51s said this should certainly be a wake-up call that the city needs to address the stadium issue.
