  THE GREEN EXPERT: NV Energy
In order to reduce Nevada's dependence on fossil fuels and provide price stability for Nevada's electric customers, NV Energy is pursuing a strategy that includes energy efficiency and conservation programs and expanded renewable energy efforts. Nevada leads the nation in geothermal and solar power per capita. However, leading the way in green energy is an effort best accomplished with the help of our customers. The simplest and most effective ways to reduce energy consumption begin at home. Just replacing one incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) reduces energy use by up to 75 percent and can save more than $30 in energy costs over the lifetime of the CFL.
Through the ENERGY STAR Lighting and Appliance Program:
  • More than 3.3 million CFLs have been distributed in Nevada, accounting for more than 209 million kWh of first-year energy savings.
  • More than 43,000 CFLs have been provided to local homebuilders to replace incandescent light bulbs in model homes.
  • Approximately 75 percent of all model homes in Las Vegas now use energy-efficient CFLs provided by the NV Energy ENERGY STAR Lighting Program.

Renewable Energy
NV Energy is moving forward with direct investments in renewable energy resources. Examples include:
  • NV Energy and its parent company, Sierra Pacific Resources, have announced plans to invest in a 200-megawatt wind generation project at China Mountain on the Idaho-Nevada border.
  • NV Energy will co-develop is 6-megawatt recovered energy generation project on the Kern River natural gas pipeline.
  • The utility also will co-develop a 30-megawatt geothermal plant at Carson Lake.
