In Latest National Polls, Race Tightens

Latest Survey Taken While Obama Vacationed, McCain Attacked

POSTED: 6:20 am PDT August 20, 2008

John McCain leads Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race by 5 points in the latest Reuters/Zogby poll, published Wednesday.

Other recent poll results also suggest a tightening race nationally, as McCain has closed the gap on Obama.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, a switch from Obama's 7-point advantage in July, the Zogby poll said.

The poll was taken Thursday through Saturday as Obama wrapped up a weeklong vacation in Hawaii.

While he was taking a break from the campaign trail, McCain kept up a steady stream of attacks on Obama.

"There is no doubt the campaign to discredit Obama is paying off for McCain right now," pollster John Zogby said. "This is a significant ebb for Obama."

An Aug. 15 Rasmussen poll shows McCain a point behind Obama, 45-46 percent. An Aug. 14 Gallup poll shows them split at 44 percent each, and an Aug. 13 Economist poll gives Obama a 41-40 percent lead over McCain.
