William Heaton, 28, was Ney's chief of staff until the Ohio Republican representative quit last year.

Ney was convicted in the scandal and got a sentence of more than two years.

Heaton acknowledged accepting a golf trip to Scotland, expensive meals, and tickets to sporting events between 2002 and 2004 as payoffs for helping clients of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Prosecutors said Heaton also helped his boss solicit and conceal gifts from lobbyists.

He faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and $250,000 in fines. No date was set for sentencing.

As part of his deal with prosecutors, Heaton will give the Justice Department information that might be useful in an ongoing investigation that has targeted lobbyists, lawmakers, their aides and members of the Bush administration.
