Fugitive Polygamist Caught With $50,000 Cash, Wig

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Authorities celebrating the capture of fugitive polygamist Warren Jeffs said they found $50,000 in cash, wigs and 16 credit cards when they searched a 2007 Escalade in which he had been a passenger.Jeffs, 50, was pulled over along Interstate 15, north of Las Vegas, after a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper noticed temporary Colorado plates that were not visible. The trooper recognized Jeff's, an infamous polygamist who is among the nation's most wanted fugitives, authorities said.Jeffs initially offered an alias, but later admitted to being the wanted man and surrendered without incident, officials said.Jeffs, whom authorities estimate has roughly 80 wives and 250 children, had eluded law enforcement since being placed on the FBI's Top Ten Most Wanted list in May.
As the leader of a Mormon sect , who is said to have 10,000 or so followers, Jeffs is wanted in Utah and Arizona on suspicion of sexual misconduct and arranging for older men to marry underage girls. He also faces charges for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.Inside of the vehicle along with Jeffs was one of his wives, 32-year-old Naomi Jeffs and his brother, Issac Steve Jeffs who is also 32. Also found in the vehice were two large suitcases, CD's and ipods, a Bible and the Book of Mormon, police said.Jeffs is in custody at the Clark County Detention Center.
