Nye Co. Detective Turns Self In

Deputy Says He Won't Allow Politics To Intimidate Him

Just a day after a complaint was filed against a sheriff's deputy who investigated embattled Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett, Sheriff Det. David Boruchowitz turned himself in to police.

Boruchowitz is being accused of corruption and harassing political candidates by the district attorney he investigated on charges of embezzlement.

Boruchowitz, Beckett claims, repeatedly lied and harassed candidates or their relatives, including the daughter of Scott Cobel, a Nevada state trooper running for Nye County sheriff, and Robert Holmes, another sheriff's candidate who was recently charged with impersonating a police officer.

The criminal complaint includes accusations that Boruchowitz falsified warrants and conducted illegal searches in his investigations.

"I took an oath when I was sworn in as a deputy of the Nye County Sheriff's Office to uphold the law and do my duties of that position,” Boruchowitz said in a statement Friday. “These duties include the investigation and arrest of individuals committing crimes in Nye County, no matter who they may be. I conducted all three investigations mentioned in the false criminal complaint filed against me honestly, appropriately, and within the limits of the laws of this state. I will continue to do my job and will not allow a politician (or his cohorts) who feels exempt from law enforcement to use his position to intimidate me into not doing my job."

Boruchowitz was booked and immediately released on his own recognizance by a judge.

The sheriff’s office said the charges against the detective are bogus and that Beckett is trying to shift attention away from his own charges.

In addition to his everyday duties, Boruchowitz also serves as the main media contact for the Nye County Sheriff’s Office and was the first to notify FOX5 of Beckett’s arrest.

Beckett is accused of siphoning money from an account linked to his office’s Bad Check Program.

The money, authorities said, was doled out in the form of “donations” to various community causes that Beckett’s family members belonged to, as well as friends who needed financial assistance.

Beckett is still the acting district attorney and has not withdrawn his name from the 2010 race.
