Goodman: Fire, Rehire City Employees

City Faces $70M Budget Shortfall

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has asked the city attorney to look into whether it would be legal and financially feasible to fire all city employees and hire them back on shorter schedules.

The short work week would save the city money, Goodman suggested, thereby ensuring no layoffs would be necessary to fill the city’s $70 million budget gap.

Survey: Should City Fire, Rehire Employees?

Goodman’s idea was met with silence from most city council members who did not want to appear in support of the idea. Councilman Ricki Barlow called it a “strong arm" tactic.

City leaders have been at odds with unions over solutions to the budget crisis, with Goodman lambasting employees who refused to take an eight percent pay cut in order for others to keep their jobs.

The city has hinted that as many as 146 layoffs would be necessary to fill the budget shortfall for the fiscal year 2011.

FOX5 wants to know what you think of Goodman's suggestion. Take our survey and sound off on THE RANT.
