LAS VEGAS -- As Las Vegas works to regain business lost in the recession, it’s becoming clear just how badly the city fared in 2009.Visitor numbers declined 3 percent last year, to 36,351,469 tourists counted overall, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. The decline was largely due to the tremendous blow suffered by convention business, which was down 23.9 percent in attendance, while the total number of conventions fell 13.6 percent. The LVCVA said the decline was in line with national travel trends."We believe that the national economy may have bottomed out so we do have cautious optimism that the economy is gradually improving and therefore travel and tourism will improve," said LVCVA representative Kevin Bagger. There was a flicker of hope that began in September, when visitor numbers began to increase. The trend continued through December when the city gained worldwide attention for the opening of CityCenter.
