Obama's Vegas Comment Reopens Old Wounds

President Ripped For 'Don't Blow Cash' Remark

UPDATED: 3:40 pm PST February 2, 2010

President Barack Obama again used Las Vegas to make a point about fiscal responsibility Tuesday, telling a crowd in New Hampshire “You don’t blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.”

This time, however, even members of his own party said he went too far.

“Lay off Las Vegas,” Sen. Harry Reid said in a statement issued shortly after the remarks spread through the internet.

“Stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn’t be spending their money,” he added.

Reid was quick to defend Obama in February 2009, when he said bailed-out companies shouldn’t book junkets in Las Vegas on the taxpayers’ dime.

At the time, Obama’s Democratic allies felt critics took the statement out of context and insisted there was no intent to discredit Las Vegas.

Now, those allies feel he’s using the city as a punching bag.

"Enough is enough! President Obama needs to stop picking on Las Vegas,” said Rep. Shelley Berkley. “He needs to let Americans decide for themselves how and where to spend their hard earned vacation dollars."

"This pattern of bashing Las Vegas to make a point must stop," echoed Rep. Dina Titus.

The fallout from Obama’s 2009 comments were felt for months, with Gov. Jim Gibbons blaming the president for a drop in tourism and convention bookings.

Gibbons even refused to meet the president during a visit to Las Vegas in May, calling the invitation to greet him at McCarran Airport a “phony setup.”

Tuesday, the Republican governor issued his sharpest criticism yet.

“How dare he insult any American city,” Gibbons said in a statement, adding that Obama's remarks were "thoughtless" and "heartless."

The governor added that Obama “has no problem coming to Las Vegas to raise campaign cash for the Democratic Party.”

With the president due to make another visit here later this month, it remains to be seen whether he’ll revisit the issue, although Reid and Berkley said they had called the White House and Gibbons said he would be writing Obama a letter.
