Police: Accused Cop Killers Have Gang Ties

Teen Suspect To Be Charged As Adult

UPDATED: 10:56 pm PST November 20, 2009

North Las Vegas police on Friday released photos of two young men accused of killing a Metro Police officer during a botched robbery at his home.

Prentice Marshall, 18, was injured in the shootout with Officer Trevor Nettleton but was released from University Medical Center and booked into the North Las Vegas Detention Center, alongside his alleged accomplice, 20-year-old Saul Williams Jr.

A third juvenile suspect, a 17-year-old, will be charged as an adult and was moved Friday from the Juvenile Detention Center to the same facility. His name has not been released.

All three are charged with murder, robbery and conspiracy. Police added a “gang enhancement” circumstance to the charges, indicating the suspects were connected to gang activity in North Las Vegas.

Nettleton’s killing appeared to be a random crime, police said Thursday, after the 30-year-old officer was shot to death in his garage. Authorities have said they think the shootout resulted from a botched robbery attempt.

A three-year veteran of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, Nettleton moved to southern Nevada after serving in the United States Marine Corps for more than nine years.

Police said Nettleton was married with two young children.

Trevor Nettleton's father Richard Nettleton lives in nearby Moxee, Wash, and said his son grew up in Yakima, Wash., where he graduated in 1997 from Davis High School.

The retired Washington State Patrol trooper told The Yakima Herald-Republic his son followed him into police work.

Richard Nettleton also said he liked the residential area near Las Vegas where his son lived and thought it would be secure for the family with two young children.
