LAS VEGAS -- The Las Vegas Mirage celebrates its 20th anniversary on Sunday.The Mirage opened its doors in 1989, upping the ante on the Strip and becoming the first of the mega-resorts to reshape Las Vegas.It is the granddaddy of the new era mega-resorts, and even at 20, the Mirage is still going strong.Video:
Mirage Debuts Renovated VolcanoIn November 1989, Milli Vanilli had the No. 1 song. The older George Bush was president. And a show called “The Simpsons” debuted on FOX. Mike Tyson was the heavyweight champ, and former “American Idol” Jordan Sparks was born -- and so was the Mirage.It was the jumpstart to Las Vegas' declining tourism numbers -- a place showcasing luxury and service, which are still the staples today.Related Link: MirageFolk, a vibrant valet who has earned one name status, is the first person most people have seen at the Mirage for all 20 years.“I call this the Pentagon of the hotels. We started it. We were here, and everything is built around it,” Folk said.The Mirage has held the test of time even with new hotels popping up all around it. This is one of the hottest places here, and everyone still wants to come to the Mirage.
