Jobless Benefits Extension Could Help 8K Nevadans

Nearly 8,000 Nevadans may qualify for the extended 14 weeks of jobless benefits under a bill signed by President Barack Obama, according to the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

More than 190,000 are currently unemployed statewide, according to the agency, while Nevada’s jobless rate stands at a record 13.3 percent.

Jobless numbers for October are due later this month.

The benefits extension bill, signed Friday, provides another 14 weeks of benefits to all out-of-work people who have exhausted their benefits or will do so by the end of the year. Those in states like Nevada where the jobless rate is 8.5 percent or above get an additional six weeks.

Nevada’s unemployment rate is the second highest in the nation, trailing only Michigan.

Anyone who has exhausted their benefits will receive a letter in the mail explaining how to apply for the extension.
