Doctors at University Medical Center thought they had lost the 2-year-old boy. He was pronounced dead, but then after a short time, he was found to have a heart beat.

The toddler was in extremely critical condition and on life support Thursday evening.

The boy’s parents moved into their home last weekend, according to a cousin who also lives there. The cousin said they were in the process of building a barricade to keep the toddlers who live there away from the pool, but they had not yet finished the barricade.

“They were getting all their stuff together, and I don’t know,” said the cousin, Jony Arita.

Arita said he could not believe what happened in the back yard of the house he shares with his cousin, her boyfriend and her young children.

“It appears like the family was having, were actually, eating, and a couple of minutes (later) they noticed he was gone and found him in the pool,” said Capt. Cedric Williams, of the North Las Vegas Fire Department.

The NLV Fire Department responded at about 11:13 a.m. to 1300 Brooks Avenue who said they found the family trying to perform CPR on the tot with instructions from a 911 operator. The 2-year-old had not yet been identified.

“I thought this would never happen to our family or nothing like that,” Arita said. “We were trying to put up barricades to keep the kids out, but they are all little, and they’ll run around.”

Arita said he moved into the house a month ago.

The near-drowning was a harsh reminder of the dangers of a swimming pool and children who can quickly wander out of site.

“It only takes a second. You really have to be conscious and aware of where your children are at all times, especially if you have pools,” Williams said.

Family and friends stopped by to grieve with the family Thursday afternoon.

The police investigation in continuing, and Child Protective Services is also investigating.
