LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas Metro police are investigating two in-custody deaths in a four-day span.Video:
9 Officers On Leave After In-Custody DeathsBoth involved officers attempting to restrain what they said were out-of-control men who could not be calmed without being restrained. The most recent incident occurred Wednesday night after a state social worker called police to the 7700 block of Scoby Court in southwest Las Vegas.Police said the social worker was attempting to calm a client who had taken several unknown medications. After an hour of speaking with the man, the officers said he became violent and was put in a chokehold before being arrested.Paramedics were called when the man suddenly stopped breathing and he died later at a hospital.A Metro representative said the investigation is ongoing and the Clark County Coroner will determine how the man died.At the same time, the coroner’s office has yet to release the cause of death for a man who died after being restrained by officers Sunday night.Police were called to a neighborhood near downtown Las Vegas to break up the fight between two roommates, one of whom was allegedly armed with a knife. The officers said one of the men, 47-year-old Daniel Morantes, was screaming, yelling and would not calm down. An ambulance crew was called after Morantes was subdued, but he stopped breathing before paramedics arrived.Morantes died later at Sunrise Medical Center.
