H1N1 Deaths Rise As Limits Placed On Vaccine

Vaccination Clinics To Be Held Nov. 7

Health officials are putting limits on a fresh supply of H1N1 vaccination shots, as two new fatal cases were reported in southern Nevada.

A 61-year-old woman and a 44-year-old woman, both of whom had underlying medical conditions, both died of H1N1 last week, the Southern Nevada Health District reported.

In response to rising demand for vaccinations, health officials said only those who cannot be given the inhaled FluMist vaccine will be given the shots during a pair of immunization clinics scheduled for the coming weekend.

All others must accept the FluMist vaccine if they want to be immunized.

The group eligible for shots includes pregnant women and children who have chronic medical conditions.

Demand for the shots led health officials to ration their remaining stockpile last week. The health district insists the FluMist is just as effective as the injected vaccine.

“The inhaled vaccine is an excellent immunization and we have seen more people in our clinic who are opting for it,” said SNHD chief health officer Dr. Lawrence Sands.

Two immunization clinics will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at:

  • Ravenholt Public Health Center, 625 Shadow Lane
  • Henderson Public Health Center, 520 E. Lake Mead Parkway
  • As of Oct. 29, the health district had received 69,600 doses of vaccine. It has administered more than 28,000 doses.
