Hard Rock Offers Relief For Booted Drivers

Customers Offered $200 Resort Credit

Drivers stung by car booting practices and tow threats at a parking lot across from the Hard Rock resort are getting a break.

Although it cannot control what happens in the strip mall parking lot at Paradise Road and Harmon Avenue, the resort announced Monday it would reimburse customers for the $200 many have been forced to pay.

“It’s just ridiculous. It’s obnoxious and it’s really not necessary,” Hard Rock Marketing Director Phil Shalala said after a FOX5 report on the “booting” complaints.

The casino will offer a $200 credit to anyone who can show their receipt after paying the parking fine. The credit can be redeemed at any casino cage.

For months, business owners at the strip mall across from the resort have employed the “Boot-It” company to place boots on vehicles belonging to Hard Rock customers.

Casino patrons are later confronted by “Boot-It” employees who demand $200 cash within minutes, or else the vehicle will be towed.

The practice is perfectly legal, but FOX5 viewers complained that “No Parking” signs are not clearly visible or are too small to read.

Some also questioned “Boot-It’s” tactics, saying that employees can sometimes be talked down from their $200 demand.

“Once you're done being a patron and you leave the property, your vehicle needs to leave with you,” said “Boot-It” owner Paul Draher, who told FOX5 employees are only doing their job.

For the past year, the Hard Rock has been undergoing a massive expansion that severely limited parking in front of the resort.

Shalala said customers will be relieved when a new eight-story parking garage would open Dec. 28.
