Driver Whose SUV Hit By Plane: 'I'm Lucky'

Candace Porter Says She Didn't Initially Know Plane Hit

Rush hour traffic consisted of more than just cars on Friday -- a plane was tangled up in the mix as well.

A plane hit a sport utility vehicle as it made a hard landing on a city street, KVVU-TV in Las Vegas reported.

The pilot and his passenger were not seriously injured after landing the plane.

Candace Porter, who was driving the SUV when she was hit by the plane, said she was unharmed, but her car is a different story.

“I'm just lucky,” Porter said. “Just driving, and all of a sudden, a crash on the top of my car.”

After pulling over, Porter said she realized the crash involved a plane.

“I opened the door, and debris fell out, and I realized the plane had just hit me,” Porter said.

Metro police said the home-built Dragonfly aircraft took off from nearby North Las Vegas Airport just moments before. Witnesses said the plane grazed some overhead lines and crossed six lanes of rush-hour traffic before hitting the ground.

Jim House said he was in his convertible only 20 feet away.

“I looked up in front of me, and I see this ‘whoosh’ come in and hit the rocks, and I noticed it was a plane,” House said.

House said he saw the pilot and a passenger walk out of the plane. The pilot was taken to University Medical Center with minor injuries.

“It could've been much worse -- more vehicles struck, more people injured severely, a fire. The plane is a little crumpled, and Candace's SUV has some roof damage, but those inside are safe tonight,” said Metro Lt. Joe Ojeda.

“That guy up above was watching over me,” Porter said.

Metro said it was unclear what caused the crash, and the National Transportation Safety Board will pick up the investigation.

Las Vegas is no stranger to plane crashes.

In August 2008, an experimental plane hit a home in North Las Vegas and burst into flames. The pilot and two inside the house were killed.

In November 2006, two crashes occurred in neighborhoods near the NLV Airport. No one died in those crashes.
