LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County coroner said an autopsy failed to confirm a cause of death for a newborn whose mother is accused of smothering the child after giving birth at home.During a preliminary hearing, coroner Gary Telgelhoff said he found no abnormalities, no signs of strangulation and the baby was not stillborn. The child’s mother, Carmela Camero, is charged with murder. She was arrested in August after reporting the child had died after she gave birth.Camero’s preliminary hearing continues on Tuesday.

A then-16-year-old Camero told police the baby was stillborn and, in a panic, she wrapped the baby in a towel and put it in the trash. The newborn was found on a conveyor belt of the resort’s trash processing facility. The Clark County district attorney decided not to prosecute Camero because authorities said they could not prove intent, due to the baby being stillborn. In a police report, Camero claimed her parents would kick her out of the house if they found out she was pregnant. She told a similar story to police in 2006.
