Parents: Green Valley High Plays 'Too Adult-Themed'

Green Valley High School has stirred up controversy with two plays that are scheduled to be performed by its theater department.

Some parents have objected, saying themes in “The Laramie Project" and "Rent" are too adult-themed, and filed a lawsuit Friday to stop the plays.

Parents said the plays weren't properly brought to parents’ attention before approving them, which violates the school district’s own policy.

Those filing the lawsuit said there are legal and moral grounds to pursue.

“Rent” is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play with topics of homosexuality, drug use and AIDS. “The Laramie Project” is the story behind the savage beating of Matthew Sheppard. Both plays are scheduled to be performed by students at GVHS.

“Just does not seem appropriate on the stage of a high school,” said concerned parent Rick Magness.

On Friday, Attorney Cory Hilton filed a complaint with Clark County District Court. Four parents are the plaintiffs against the school district.

“There may be people that may have a right to put that on somewhere and some place, and I certainly wouldn't get in their way if it wasn't a school setting,” Magness said.

“How hard is it to get on the Internet and send out a boiler-plate letter to the parents of the children in this school and say, ‘These are the plays we are considering, please respond with your concerns,’” Hilton said.

Concerning plays, school district regulation 6130 states, "profanity, inappropriate dress or any action promoting the acceptability of alcohol, drugs or immoral conduct, shall be prohibited.” But 6130 also says this is up to the discretion of the school's principal.

Green Valley Principal Jeff Horn sent a letter to Hilton stating that he's approved the plays as appropriate for high school students. Both have been edited for younger audiences using less offensive wording.

Hilton said he has about 50 parents behind him. Even though the play is not being held during normal school hours, Hilton said according to policy, it's still curriculum. His solution would be to have the students do this on their own time and off school property.

Pending the litigation, the Clark County School District had no comment on the plays at this time.

“The Laramie Project” is set to debut Nov. 16.
