Las Vegas said goodbye to a fallen officer.

Milburn Beitel, 30, was laid to rest Wednesday. He was killed last week after his patrol car flipped over near Nellis Boulevard.

Hundreds of fellow officers came out to pay their respects. There was a gathering at the church for the funeral and then an intimate burial.

Officers said it was the proper way to send off their friend.

A family, police department and entire community mourned the passing of Beitel. Fellow policemen thought back to the night when the crash took their friend's life.

“When I found Millie ... all I could do was hold his hand," said Metro officer James Bertuccini.

The former Clark County Sheriff remembered the day Beitel joined the force.

“I did hire him, swear him in, pin his badge on him," said former Sheriff Bill Young. “He had a good sense of humor and was very compassionate and giving person.”

Metro leaders had nothing but good words to say about the fallen hero. Tears turned to some smiles as loved ones recalled Beitel's unique personality on the job.

After the funeral, Beitel was buried, surrounded by hundreds of officers, family and friends. The service was traditional, with quiet moments of prayer and reflection and a final goodbye.

“I give you my word, Milburn and his service with never be forgotten," said Metro Sheriff Doug Gillespie.

Beitel was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He moved to Las Vegas in 1995 and later graduated from Silverado High School.

Metro police are urging anyone who wants to make a donation in his name to give to the Injured Police Officers Fund.
