Las Vegas Metro police Sheriff Doug Gillespie didn’t deny that the sudden death of Officer Milburn Beitel put him on familiar ground.

“Unfortunately I stood before you roughly five months ago … Again I’m back before you today,” Gillespie said at a news conference Thursday.

He had been front-and-center the morning of May 7, when Metro police announced the death of Officer James Manor following a collision with a pickup truck on Flamingo Road.

Both officers grew up in Las Vegas and joined Metro police at a young age.

Beitel, 30, graduated from Silverado High School in 1997. Manor, 28, graduated from Clark High School two years later.

It’s unknown whether the two officers knew each other, but Gillespie said they held one thing in common.

“There’s a bond that’s created between these officers and these employees within our organization,” he said, adding, “I feel confident when I say we’re a family, because we truly are.”

“When you lose a person, it impacts you as an organization,” he said.
