Las Vegas Metro police Officer Milburn Beitel, who died following a fiery car wreck Wednesday night, graduated from Silverado High School in 1997, the Clark County School District confirmed Thursday.

The 30-year-old Beitel, known to fellow officers as “Millie,” was rushed to University Medical Center after his police cruiser flipped over and caught fire at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Nellis Boulevard.

His partner, who hasn’t been identified, was in serious condition Thursday morning.

Metro Sheriff Doug Gillespie has scheduled an 11 a.m. news conference at City Hall to discuss the accident.

Witnesses at the scene told FOX5 another car cut the cruiser off, but Metro police could not confirm what happened.

Gillespie said he did not know if the cruiser had its lights and sirens on at the time of the accident.

Streets around the accident scene were still blocked off to traffic Wednesday morning as police investigators tried to piece together the crash.
