LAS VEGAS -- A baby nearly drowned late Wednesday afternoon and was rescued by neighbors. The infant, who was not quite 2, was found swimming in a pool in the back of a home on Sportsmans Drive, near Washington Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard.A neighbor across the street heard yelling and rushed over to help. When family members went outside to find their baby in the pool, the quiet street was deafened by screams.“The first thing I thought was someone got hurt or something,” said neighbor Timothy Amber.Amber lives across the street and said he was in his backyard and knew his neighbors were in trouble.“I was outside smoking a cigarette, and I heard a bunch of screaming of kids, and I know they have a swimming pool,” Amber said.Amber said he ran to the house and saw the baby was unconscious.“She wasn’t breathing. She was turning blue. And I turned her over and started doing CPR with her nose and pumping on her chest,” Amber said.Amber and another neighbor performed CPR for about 15 minutes -- until paramedics took over.“When medical personnel arrived, the baby was breathing. The baby was transported to UMC hospital where we have been told she is expected to fully recover,” said Metro spokesman Bill Cassell.Amber said he does not think he is a hero.“No. I’m just another person trying to save a life, and I just hope someone else would do the same thing,” Amber said.He said he was glad he knew what to do.“Anybody who can take CPR, take it. Because you don’t know when you’re going to need to use it,” Amber said.“To any bystander -- as a police department and as a community, we say thank you,” Cassell said.Metro police’s abuse and neglect section will be conducting an investigation to find out how the baby wound up in the pool.
