Police: Boy Swerved Bike Into Traffic

Child Briefly Trapped Under Car

UPDATED: 11:03 am PDT September 29, 2009

Paramedics rushed an 8-year-old boy to University Medical Center in critical condition Tuesday after the child was hit by a car while riding his bicycle.

Police said the boy, for an unknown reason, swerved his bike into traffic on Washington Avenue near Decatur Boulevard. He was briefly pinned under the car until an ambulance arrived.

He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Tuesday’s accident comes one week after a Coronado High School student was hit by a minivan while riding his bike to school.

Austin Paxson, 18, was still hospitalized in serious condition Monday.

The minivan was driven by another student, a 17-year-old, who was pulling onto Sunridge Heights Parkway from Rich Perez Jr. Drive.

No charges were filed against the driver, whose name wasn’t released.
