LAS VEGAS -- The driving death of a 16-year-old Friday night is bringing the dangers of teen street racing back into the spotlight.Metro police confirm Del Sol High School senior Corey Knight was speeding at the time of his fatal crash. Will his death remind Las Vegas Valley teenagers to drive more carefully?Grief counselors were at Del Sol Monday helping students cope with Knight’s sudden death.“I know a couple friends who went there because they couldn’t handle it,” said Del Sol senior Andy Anderson.Anderson said he had been a close friend of Corey's for five years. He and others said there's a group of teens at Del Sol who like to go fast. They said the group races in circles, goes to certain streets and do tricks to show off.For students, this tragedy is another reminder about responsibility behind the wheel. Can we stop this from happening? Parents said they struggle to find a balance.“You’re always taking away their freedoms to create their safety. It’s a catch-22. What are you going to do,” said parent Lisa Montean.Police preach two ways to intervene -- one is other students applying peer pressure to drive safely.“Adults, parents, even police can talk ‘til we’re blue in the face, but that does not have the same impact as kids talking with other kids,” said Metro Sgt. Oscar Chavez. The second is for parents to get in the car with their teenagers and see just how they drive.“They get to see first-hand the driving behavior and attitude of their children,” Chavez said.Metro said the two other teens who were in the vehicle during the fatal crash have not fully explained what led up to the wreck.
