Woman: Henderson Company Ripped Me Off

Halphem Drives 10 Hours To Try To Help Others Avoid Same Fate

A disabled woman drove 10 hours to Henderson to tell police she had been ripped off.

The woman gave $3,000 to a Henderson-based company that said it could deliver hundreds of thousands in return.

Victoria Halphem, from Farmington, N.M., said three months ago she received a call from National Financial Advisors about a deal to get her more money that companies give out as grants.

Halphen and her husband own a small computer store near the four corners of New Mexico.

She said the company called her and said, “We have companies all over the United States that have monies available to businesses like yours.”

The representative said the company offered grant writing services and told Halphem they would apply for readily-available money for her business.

Halphen said two days later, a fax said 899 foundations had qualified her business for $684,000.

NFA provided Halphen all the research she needed, including paperwork that showed the business was licensed. The company even offered additional services, such as Web design and development business planning.

But to begin it all, Halphen was asked to send a check up front.

Two months after sending the money, Halphen said no services had been provided.

“We called. We called. We called. We never got any kind of an answer. Nobody ever talked to us,” Halphen said.

On Thursday afternoon, NFAs office was empty. When calling the office, callers received the message: “You have reached our customer services department. All our representatives are currently assisting other clients.”

“I’m not young. I've been around the block. These people, they are so smooth. ... Butter could melt in their mouth,” Halphen said.

The city of Henderson has received dozens of complaints and investigated the company for a year, but the city said it has not gotten very far for a good reason.

“None of the people they have solicited for business have been in Henderson or within the state, and that makes it additionally more difficult for us to investigate, because there are no victims or clients here locally where we can work with them in the investigation,” said city of Henderson spokesman Bud Cranor.

Halphen now said she wants to help others avoid losing money to the company.

“I wasn’t willing to sit in Framington, N.M., and let them rip off one more person,” Halphen said.

Halphen met with officials from Henderson and the Attorney General’s Office. The city said that not doing anything is not a crime but they did say the company needed to be heavily scrutinized.

FOX5 called number after number to get a hold of the company, and they all led to the same customer service message.

The company’s current listing with the Better Business Bureau lists NFA with a B+ rating.
