Students To Rally Against Budget Cuts

District Looking For 'Compromise'

With budget cuts threatening their favorite programs, Durango High School students plan to rally Tuesday night at Desert Breeze Park in Las Vegas.

The cuts, students said, have forced the school to eliminate the choir and performing arts classes, as well as lay off the program’s conductor.

“The loss of music in a school is truly a loss indeed. If the music program leaves Durango, I don't think I'll ever go back either,” said student Jacqueline Matuszak in an e-mail to FOX5.

Clark County School District representative Michael Rodriguez said classes have not been eliminated, only rescheduled or limited, forcing students to choose between a core class or an elective class.

Rodriguez said the school is trying to find a compromise to accommodate students.

Tuesday’s rally is scheduled for 5 p.m.
