LAS VEGAS -- A man accused in a New York-New York casino shooting spree on the Las Vegas Strip that injured five people has been found guilty on almost all counts.A jury found 53-year-old Steven Zegrean guilty on 51 criminal charges -- all except for one count of attempted murder. The jury deliberated for about 4.5 hours. There was a lot of evidence to go through.

Zegrean was found guilty on various charges, including burglary, battery, assault and attempted murder with a deadly weapon. He was found not guilty on a single count of attempted murder because the state had a problem initially identifying the victim. But surveillance video and witness testimony proved strong tools for the jury.“We knew what he did. It was a question if the jury would agree with us," said prosecutor Revi Vawa. "We felt good about this case. We knew he committed these crimes."The defense admitted they had some weaknesses going into trial."It was a very challenging case. We thought we raised many valid points," said defense attorney Lynn Avants. “We understood there was a strong likelihood he would be convicted."Zegrean's attorney said that they were disappointed but realistic about the case.Prosecutors said there was never a plea deal on the table and that this was the outcome they were looking for."The longer that man is in prison, the safer we all are," Vawa said. While Zegrean said he went into the hotel to commit "suicide by cop," his defense said they don't think he's a suicide risk while in custody.Zegrean is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 31.
