LAS VEGAS -- A 4-year-old boy is the victim in the seventh death after a Valley near drowning over the weekend. The Las Vegas area has now reached the total amount of pool deaths for all of last year.At least one realtor is trying to stop this trend. Many Valley pools have no fence or pool net. But because of how dangerous this can be, one realtor says no fence, no sell.On Saturday, another toddler died in a preventable death.“Anybody that watches a child -- this is the most important job you could ever have. Watch your child -- particularly around the pool,” said Metro Lt. Ray Steiber.Realtor Mike Hamerling sold a home that had a pool without a fence once and recommended to the new owners to get a fence, but they didn't.“They promised they would. We got a call three months later the baby had drowned in the pool,” Hamerling said. “We went to the funeral, and the mother of the baby ran to my wife screaming that the baby would still be alive if we listened to you.”That's when he and his wife decided they would not sell anymore homes that don't already have safety measures in place.“It's not worth it to have somebody die. What's the commission compared to a death?” Hamerling said.Pool owner Jennifer Allan said it was never an option for her.“Peace of mind. It doesn’t have to be your own kid. It could be their friends, the neighborhood kids -- you have to protect them as well,” Allan said.Metro police said this is a trend they want to turn around, but they cannot do it on their own.Pool fences can be found online for as low as $200. Those who can afford to have a pool should be able to afford a fence. There is no federal pool fence law in the U.S., but several states, including Florida, California and Arizona have state laws in place.
