LAS VEGAS -- The Board of Regents has voted 10-1 not to renew the contract of University of Nevada, Las Vegas President David Ashley, the Las Vegas Review-Journal said.

After the vote on Friday, the board voted unanimously to reassign him to faculty, the R-J said.

The R-J said earlier Friday that supporters and detractors of Ashley testified on whether he should be kept on or fired.

Student leaders and others have praised Ashley as an effective leader, while some regents and alumni have criticized him as ineffective, the R-J said.
