Vegas Man Wins Right To ‘HOE’ Vanity Plate

Man Claims Plate Is Short For 'Tahoe'

Whether people like it or not, the Nevada Supreme Court said a Las Vegas man can keep the “HOE” that put him in the headlines.

William Junge battled with the Department of Motor Vehicles after the agency refused to let him renew the personalized “HOE” license plate he had from 1999 to 2006. When it was first issued, Junge couldn’t get the “TAHOE” he wanted for his 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe, so he shortened the word.

In 2006, the DMV objected to the plate because of its negative connotation. A committee argued that an Urban Dictionary definition of the word “Hoe” was short for “whore.”

Junge teamed with the American Civil Liberties Union and fought the DMV, saying the word was only meant to reflect his truck’s brand and he’d even picked a Lake Tahoe background for the license plate.

The ACLU backed up those claims by reminding the DMV that a hoe was also a gardening tool, and said the agency’s decision was based on a vague reference.

In its decision, the court said the Urban Dictionary includes user contributions that "do not always reflect generally accepted definitions for words."
