LAS VEGAS -- A Fourth of July stunt on the Las Vegas Strip took a bad turn Saturday, but officials have been slow to reveal what went wrong.Hundreds of people outside watched as a stage curtain went up in flames before magician Steve Wyrick’s much-hyped “Death Drop” at the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino. As crews rushed in with fire extinguishers, a stuntman was treated by paramedics near a box that was supposed to contain Wyrick.Minutes earlier, witnesses had watched as Wyrick was shackled to the box by Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington. But when the fire broke out, the stunt was stopped. A helicopter landed nearby and Wyrick was seen getting out, free from the shackles.During the act, a crane was to lift the box, supposedly with Wyrick inside, over a set of spikes. Bennington was to light fire to ropes holding the box and the magician was to break free and escape just before the box crashed on the stage. Although the fire and Wyrick’s helicopter landing were caught on videotape, resort officials aren’t revealing his secrets. A spokesperson did say the stuntman will recover from his injuries.Calls to Wyrick’s publicist were not immediately returned, so it’s unknown whether the fire was part of the act or how Wyrick escaped the shackles.
