Vegas Physician's Office Given Cease, Desist

Skin + Body Institute, Dr. Su Being Investigated

A cease and desist letter has been given to a Las Vegas physician’s office operating as unlicensed ambulatory surgery center, according to the Nevada State Health Division’s Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance.

The letter was delivered to the Skin + Body Institute, 2451 Professional Court, Suite 110, in Las Vegas. The clinic is operated by Dr. Sean Su.

The letter was hand-delivered by bureau investigators who inspected the office Thursday after receiving notification on Wednesday from the Board of Medical Examiners about a breast augmentation surgery and follow up procedure performed there that ultimately resulted in the patient being hospitalized with an infection, the Health Department said.

Investigators said they found the Skin + Body Institute was stocked with expired medications and unlabeled medication, as well as severe breakdowns in infection control practices, including sterile supply breaches and a lack of documentation on the use, operation and maintenance of sterilization equipment.

“While we expect doctors to follow law, it’s clear that there are those who operate in bad faith and don’t follow the laws the State of Nevada,” Health Division Administrator Richard Whitley said in a news release. “It is illegal to perform surgery in a facility not licensed by the state of Nevada to do so. This law is in place to protect the public from problems such as this one.”

It is not clear at this point what type of business license the Skin + Body Institute holds from the local government, but it was not licensed as an ambulatory surgery center, the Health Department said.

The case in question involved an initial breast augmentation surgery performed by Dr. Su at the Skin + Body Institute on April 16. The patient returned to Dr. Su on June 3 to address problems with the first procedure, and an implant was reinserted, the Health Department said.

The patient was admitted to a southern Nevada hospital on June 15 with an infection in the area of the surgery, leading to an eventual complaint to the Board of Medical Examiners, which is conducting its own investigation into Dr. Su.
