Nearly 200 Laid Off At Venetian
Resort Cutting Jobs During Record Unemployment

LAS VEGAS -- A spokesperson for the Las Vegas Sands Corp. confirmed that 194 employees had been laid off from the Venetian resort since Monday.The layoffs affected a number of departments, although the company could not provide specifics. But the spokesperson said the decision was based on the economy and the company’s effort to “right size.”Survey: Have You Or Someone You Know Lost A Job In The Last Year?In March Las Vegas Sands Corp. cut 283 jobs at the Venetian and Palazzo resorts. More than 200 jobs were also cut in late 2008.Wednesday’s announcement also comes on the heels of a brutal jobless report citing Nevada’s record 11.3 percent unemployment rate. An estimated 154,600 people were out of work in May, according to the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Of that total, officials said 112,700 were in Clark County.
