Las Vegas police searched for a hit-and-run driver who collided with a motorcyclist Wednesday, while at the same time urging safety after a recent surge in fatal accidents.

Since Monday, there have been four fatal accidents involving motorcyclists or bicyclists. Police blamed two of them on drunken drivers.

The most recent accident happened this morning near Sahara Avenue and Durango Road. Robert Hicks, 26, died when a Hummer making a left turn pulled into his lane. The motorcyclist was unable to stop in time and struck the front of the Hummer.

No charges have been filed against the other driver, 75-year-old Heinz Ward.

Police said they were seeking the driver of a sport utility vehicle involved in another fatal crash Tuesday night on Desert Inn Road. A sport utility vehicle turning onto the road hit a motorcycle, pinning the 48-year-old driver underneath another car. He died of his injuries.

Authorities said the SUV driver fled the scene.

Two accidents Monday were blamed on alleged drunken drivers.

Charlie Matanza, 50, was arrested after his SUV struck a bicyclist near the corner of Desert Inn Road and Sandhill Road.

“According to one witness who was directly behind the GMC, he jumped the curb and was driving partially on the sidewalk westbound on two different occasions and then eventually struck the bicyclist,” said Metro Sgt. Oscar Chavez.

Police said the biker was following all the rules of the road before he was struck, and he was wearing a helmet.

A woman whom police said was driving drunk was blamed for a crash that killed a motorcyclist early Monday morning.

Police said the driver, who hasn’t been identified, pulled into the motorcyclist’s path near Blue Diamond Road and Durango Road. The motorcyclist was thrown from the bike and died at the scene.

“Signs of alcohol were detected,” said Nevada Highway Patrol spokesperson Kevin Honea when asked about the woman’s condition. She was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
