Incident Marks Second Pool Tragedy In Week

A toddler was in critical condition Tuesday night after nearly drowning in a North Las Vegas pool.

The incident occurred at a home near North Decatur Boulevard and West Ann Road.

This is the second pool tragedy involving a child in the last week. There have been more than 40 near drownings since the first of the year.

Police said now is the time for parents to take this warning to heart.

A 2-year-old girl was rushed to a local hospital. She was unresponsive when medics arrived.

Neighbors were shaken by the news, especially those with children of their own.

"I lectured these girls. They are not allowed to be near the pool without adult supervision," said neighbor and parent Johanna Taijeron.

Many homeowners nearby have pools and said parents should never take their eyes off the water.

"You have to watch them. They are clumsy, adventurous, curious," neighbor and grandparent Judi Motyka.

Investigators said the mercury is rising and so is the risk.

"Unfortunately, over the last few weeks, we've seen tragic events taking place here. In all of these, drownings are preventable," said Metro’s Special Victims Unit Lt. Ray Steiber.

"This is Las Vegas. Everybody's got a pool -- got to be extra careful," Motyka said.

Police said they are still investigating. The toddler’s mother was home at the time.

Five children have drowned so far this year in the Valley.
