Rogers Blames Public For Education Failures

Outgoing Chancellor Releases Final Memo

Jim Rogers, the outspoken and often polarizing chancellor of Nevada’s university system, released his final memo to the public before leaving office Tuesday. In it he took parting shots at the people of Nevada, saying they have “never believed in higher education.”

During his five-year term as chancellor Rogers frequently butted heads with legislators and higher education officials as he struggled to secure more funding for state universities.

In the end, he placed the blame on the public.

“Nevada has always thought that because its residents could feed, house and clothe themselves with an eighth grade education,” he wrote, adding that the system will remain “embedded in mediocrity” unless Nevadans change their attitude.

Rogers also said Gov. Jim Gibbons “refused to lift a financial hand” during the last legislative session, when Gibbons ignored Rogers’ call for certain tax increases to fill the state’s budget gap and fund the university system.

In the end, much of the burden fell on students, who will be forced to absorb a 10 percent tuition increase that goes into effect this fall. The increase, approved by Regents, is meant to offset a 12 percent cut to the annual budget.

Rogers is also leaving on the heels of controversy. He recently said UNLV President David Ashley should be fired from his job. Ashley responded, saying he has no plans to step down.

The Nevada Board of Regents appointed vice chancellor Dan Klaich to take over for Rogers.
