Drunk Driver Blamed In Fatal Cyclist Crash

Man Fails Sobriety Test At Scene, Police Say

An apparent drunken driver has been arrested after being accused of running down a bicyclist. The collision occurred at about 3 p.m. near the corner of East Desert Inn and South Sandhill roads.

The victim’s body was found trapped underneath an SUV.

The SUV and the bike were traveling westbound on Desert Inn Road. The bike was on the sidewalk when it was struck.

The westbound lanes of Desert Inn Road were littered with the evidence of a fatal crash -- a smashed bike, a dented SUV, a bike helmet and the spot where a 43-year-old man was slammed into the pavement.

Charlie Matanza, 50, was behind the wheel of the SUV, and Metro police said he was impaired.

“He was provided with a field sobriety test. He failed at the scene and was subsequently placed under arrest for DUI with substantial bodily harm,” said Sgt. Oscar Chavez.

Before the collision, witnesses said Matanza's vehicle was completely out of control.

“According to one witness who was directly behind the GMC, he jumped the curb and was driving partially on the sidewalk westbound on two different occasions and then eventually struck the bicyclist,” Chavez said.

As Areli Perez sat in her fireworks stand, she said she saw what happened when the man was struck on the sidewalk.

“I saw the truck dragging the body,” Perez said.

When the SUV came to a stop, the driver went looking for a body.

“He was running back to where the scene was, but the body was under his car,” Perez said.

Matanza then came back to his vehicle, discovering the cyclist trapped underneath and then grabbed a jack inside his truck to try to lift the car off the victim.

“His body was on his feet. His body was like under the car,” Perez said.

The biker was eventually pulled out by several firefighters, police officers and witnesses but pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Sunrise Hospital.

Police said the biker was following all the rules of the road before he was struck, and he was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the SUV and another occupant in the vehicle were unharmed.

This was the fifth bike-related death of the year. This time last year, the Valley had just one bike-related fatality.
